Hyphen is a multidisciplinary design studio led by a husband-and-wife team who believe that 1 + 1 = 5—the whole becomes far greater than the sum of its parts. As a small, agile practice, we draw from a wide network of collaborators—architects, illustrators, fabricators, and creative thinkers—to imagine thoughtful, resonant design solutions.
Joined together in life and in work, Ashley and Tanner founded Hyphen with a shared belief: good design thrives when it’s shaped by good people.
About Us
Tanner brings a background in industrial Design, pairing an instinct for materials with a deep love of three-dimensional form. His experience shapes the way we think about environmental graphics and spatial storytelling.
Ashley, rooted in architecture and landscape architecture, has become an expert in editorial design and typography. Her craft brings clarity, rhythm, and intention to every page.
Together, their curiosity across scales gives each visual identity system its texture, structure, and a touch of whimsy.

A few principles that shape our approach.
Trust Your Gut
Years of experience have shaped our design instincts, helping us navigate decisions—from typography to built systems—with quiet confidence. Our intuition guides us toward solutions that feel both considered and right for your needs. Though, every now and then, our gut still leads us to cookies.
Pay Attention
Look closely at the things, places, and people you love. Notice why you love them. The world is full of tiny sparks—color, flavor, texture, language, shape—waiting to be gathered. Take time to study them. Jot notes. Make a doodle. Small observations become big ideas.
Lift Your Chin
Design is meaningful work—and so are walks in the park, shared meals, and laughter with friends. We make space for both: work that inspires and rest that restores. When we’re grounded, curious, and well-rested, the best ideas tend to show up.
Be Great, Not Flawless
Great design leaves room for nuance, experimentation, and growth. Perfection, on the other hand, doesn’t exist (and isn’t very interesting). We aim to create work that is vibrant, whimsical, refined, and full of heart—work that ages well, like something meant to be lived with.
Make, Make, Repeat
Creativity thrives in motion. We sketch, explore, and iterate—working through the “so-so” to uncover the beautiful. Each round sharpens the language of the design, balancing boldness with appropriateness and clarity with character.
